Open Reef - A Plateau of Predators and Rare Encounters
Located approximately 400 meters off the coast of Three Islands, this challenging reef dive is recommended only for experienced divers due to its frequent currents and deep drop-offs. The reef’s upper section lies just 5 metres below the surface, but the depth quickly extends to 60–70 metres, offering dramatic underwater terrain and advanced exploration opportunities.
The centre of the reef forms a broad plateau, where large schools of migratory fish attract powerful predators such as greater amberjack. The biodiversity here is impressive - sea hares, including some rare species not found elsewhere in the region, can be spotted across the reef surface.
At varying depths, divers may encounter an incredible array of marine life, including:
- Barracudas
- Leerfish
- Dusky and white groupers
- Loggerhead sea turtles
- Stingrays and eagle rays
- Red porgies
- Dentex
- Moray eels
- Scorpionfish
- Swallowtail seaperches
This reef is a magnet for pelagic species and marine predators, making it a prime site for those seeking a thrilling dive rich in biological diversity. Due to the strong currents and deep profiles, dives here should always be conducted with proper planning and professional guidance.
