Gelidonya Antique Shipwreck: 3200 year old mystery!

Gelidonya - Dive into 3,200 Years of History

Located at the westernmost tip of the Gulf of Antalya, today known as Cape Taşlık, Gelidonya is the largest of five islands that line the southern side of the cape. Positioned between the districts of Adrasan and Kumluca, this area is not only a diving destination but also a place of significant archaeological and historical interest.

The Gelidonya shipwreck was first discovered in 1954 by a sponge diver from Bodrum. Lying at a depth of 28 metres, it became the focus of a groundbreaking archaeological expedition in 1960 - the first academic underwater archaeological research ever conducted in Turkey. The expedition revealed that the ship dates back to the 13th century B.C., during the Late Bronze Age.

Though most of the artefacts have been recovered and are now exhibited in the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, divers can still explore the site, where fragments of the ship and its anchor remain. It offers a unique opportunity to quite literally dive into 3,200 years of history, making it an unforgettable experience for divers with an appreciation for the past.

Adding to the allure of the site is the Gelidonya Lighthouse, perched on a scenic footpath that attracts hikers and nature lovers. The lighthouse not only serves as a historic maritime beacon but also adds a striking visual backdrop to the area’s natural beauty.

Whether you are drawn by underwater exploration or the call of ancient history, Gelidonya offers a powerful connection between past and present in a setting of breathtaking coastal wilderness.
